Hiring: Freelance Designer
Susu Studio is calling out to freelance designers to join our small team for 2-3 days per week.
We’re looking for a Graphic Designer to work with us across all aspects of the studio, from identity projects to in-house initiatives. This role is for someone needing flexibility in their schedule, but after a creatively rich environment.
The start date is to be confirmed (pending availability) with an initial period of approx. 6 months. This is a part time position that will be in-person at our Footscray studio (close to public transport and parking). Holidays are welcome, and outright encouraged.
We pride ourselves on a socially-aware and responsible approach to communicating with clever design. Our practice focuses on divergent research, long-lasting bonds with our collaborators and detailed, immersive solutions. We have an ever-growing and diverse list of clients and projects from hospitality to technology to not-for-profit sectors. We place an emphasis on our work in creative direction and identity, but by taking a holistic approach to communication design, we are not limited in our scope.
General Requirements:

Previous independent freelancer or in-house experience in a design studio environment (preferably in a small studio). This particular role is not for a recent graduate.

Experience across a broad variety of work, in particular; identity projects and campaign development and roll-out.

Working understanding of the design development process from briefing through to production.
- Excellent grasp on all forms of communication, presentation and organisation.
- Next-level attention to detail and self initiation.
- Ability to work independently, collaboratively and under direction.
- Readiness to work with and meet tight deadlines when needed.
- Strong interests outside of design.
- Finger on the cultural pulse, local and abroad.
- Great (or bad) sense of humour.
- Must love dogs (and other animals).
Skillset, Must-Have:
- Master-level proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Illustrator

Super high-level A+++ ability in typesetting and eye for typography

Understanding of web design basics and/or front-end development

Operational Responsibilities:

Work collaboratively with the team to execute considered work at all levels across all projects that come through the studio, big and small.

Design holistic creative experiences that are both grounded in practicality as well as pushing the envelope, all wrapped up in a solid foundation of thought and reasoning.

Create design systems and extensions for all mediums and formats, creating consistency via hierarchy, considered layout, grids, and typography.

Participate in discussions around creative direction, photo shoots, artwork and production.

Have a creative opinion and personal sense of taste and style

Research and look to others — both in our industry and out — past, present and future — for inspiration and reference.

Present work with confidence and empathy and clearly explain decisions to the studio and clients.

Liaise with and act as a point-of-contact for clients during a project’s lifecycle.

Participate in internal projects and exercises, i.e. portfolio, website updates, events, gallery field trips, etc.
