Santito
A new identity and re-imagining of a well-loved venue in Melbourne, Hotel Jesus. It’s always a tricky dance working with a brand and visual language that you’re personally so fond of. Hotel Jesus, was a a ground-breaking hit on Smith St when it launched in 2016 in service, interior, brand and originality as a purveyor of authentic, modern Mexican dining.
A new team is now steering the iconic venue to rediscover its fire under the name Santito. With that, a new visual identity was needed to signify the carefully curated change, but respectfully work within the context of the immersive space that made Hotel Jesus a landmark.
The key touchpoints of the identity – particularly the custom wordmark – took visual cues from the tiled walls and surfaces throughought the space. Pared back with a limited type family and colour palette, this refined approach to work in tight harmony with a cornucopian backdrop of mis-match surfaces, materials and furnishings.
This shift also helped to carve out a distinct voice amongst a crowded market of contemporary taquerias that often pay homage to the lo-fi/ad-hoc visual language of Mexico City street food.
